Transition Gallery is a contemporary art organisation run by practicing artists in the heart of Londons east end. Alongside the showing of art, Transition works in a variety of different ways to add to the art experience and to encourage visitors to the gallery.
Much of the art we show is by artists at the beginning of their careers and our aim to bring new art to audiences is very much focused on bringing their new idea to the widest possible audience. This involves organising talks, screenings and workshops, and publishing accompanying books and essays. The gallery has no admission charge and is staffed by artists who are happy to answer any questions that visitors may have.

Lyrics have a powerful artistic poignancy and with this in mind Transition Gallery have asked over fifty contemporary artists to make a new work inspired by a favourite lyric for the exhibition Awopbopaloobop.
The synthesis of music and art has a long history from pop to post modern, with particular songs becoming integral to the making of individual pieces of work.
Unsurprisingly Awopbopaloobop features a diverse array of lyrics from the political rallying cry of the Internationale to the plaintive gospel of The Sweet Inspirations via The Ting Tings, Joy Division, The Smiths, Sibylle Baier, Pavement, PJ Harvey, The Jam and many more. Using a variety of media Awopbopaloobop transforms this cacophony of passionately felt lyrical paeans into visual manifestations of aural desire.
Participating artists include Andrew Mania, Jasper Joffe, Paul Housley, Annie Kevans, Marcus Oakley, Jake Clark, Harry Pye, Laura Oldfield Ford, Mark Gubb, Michael Ajerman Cathy Lomax, Paul Becker, Nadia Hebson Rachel Cattle and Alex Michon.
The show will coincide with the rock n roll issue of Garageland Magazine which will feature Thurston Moore, MIA, Kylie Minogue, Bernard Rhodes, Peter Liversidge, Slade in Flames and the top ten art bands.
