The City HotelThe City Hotel

Rooms start from: £140 per night as standard but can sink as low as £45 at the weekend.

The City Hotel is very convenient for both the city and the attractions around Brick lane and Whitechapel. The rooms are spacious and even if some could stand a refresh on the decoration they are both comfortable and clean, while many have exciting urban views that are hard to match elsewhere.

The hotel currently has 87 rooms but another 25 will be ready summer 2007 and all include en-suite facilities, TV and IDD telephone as well as a hair dryer, an iron, tea and coffee-making facilities and safety boxes. There's also Internet access, for a minimum charge.

However, what really works in the City's favour are the superb eating and drinking options that form part of the hotel complex. Both Café Suki and The Lane offer elegant dining and The Lane some great DJ nights, as well as cocktails and dancing until 3am.

Express by Holiday Inn

Rooms can be found for under £80. Standard prices start at £105.

Holiday Inn is the staple traveller's companion: sturdy, reliable and all-pervading. This Express version, known as the London City, is a good example of the brand, with 224 rooms and all a five-minute walk from Old Street tube.

Conferencing facilities are available and there's a restaurant and bar located on the ground floor. Breakfast, of the continental variety, is included in the price.  High-speed internet is available in the bedrooms and in the lobby area. And while the hotel may lack charisma, it certainly makes up for it in convenience.

Hoxton HotelThe Hoxton Hotel

The earlier you book the less you pay. Rooms start at £29 rising to £59 then £79, gradually up to an absolute maximum of £149.

A boutique hotel experience without the boutique price tag, The Hoxton has added a swanky new front to the Great Eastern Street parade

Each of the 205 rooms is comfortable, air-conditioned and elegantly designed, with a flat screen TV, free WIFI, Frette linen and duck down duvets. The great power shower en-suites come with Pears Soap.  Lite Prêt breakfast can be delivered to the door, plus there's a litre of mineral water in your fridge and fresh milk for your cup of morning tea!

The Hoxton is more realistic about its extras which helps keep prices reasonable - so, yes, there's a hairdryer in every room, but no, you won't find a chocolate on your pillow. In the lobby you'll find a well-stocked 24-hour shop for everything from confectionery to champagne and all at regular, retail prices. The Hoxton also has two private dining rooms and seven meeting rooms.

The Saint Gregory

Standard price is £259 per night per room but it's possible to get some bargain deals, especially at weekends when the price can come as low as £65.

Really the Rolls Royce of Shoreditch hotels at the moment, The Saint Gregory has stunning views, a swanky bar and restaurant plus a luxurious modern feel.

The 196 bedrooms boast spacious layouts and well-appointed extras such as a settees and coffee tables which give the feeling of being in a suite. Conferencing facilities are available.

We recommend the breakfast spread - it really is worth getting up for and the city views are stunning. The ground floor bar gives a fish-bowl view of the shenanigans up and down Shoreditch High Street but watch out for the stinging prices when ordering cocktails.
