D*Face, a.k.a. the artist Dean Stockton, has created a body of work that reflects our increasingly bizarre fascination with celebrity, fame, consumerism and materialism. Using iconic motifs, cultural figures and genres appropriated from currency, advertising, and comic books, aPOPcalypse Now challenges us to look beneath the veneer of our conspicuous society.
aPOPcalypse Now is an entirely new body of work. The name derives from the term
D*Face uses to define his work - aPOPcalyptic – which is a metaphorical backdrop for the corruptive, persuasive consumerist folly that has been force fed into our society for the last five decades. The imagery presented by D*Face delivers the viewer a moral dilemma: to embrace or reject.
D*Face himself explains; “Colliding cultures are no longer receptive to the American way, the Superhero's triumph of good over evil as portrayed through the political circus is now decoded through the eyes of different cultures, weary and wary of the sub-plot played in today’s political climate where war equals brand invasion”.
Having exhibited across the world from New York to Melbourne, D*Face's London solo show has been long awaited since Death or Glory, his 2006 sell out solo show at StolenSpace gallery.
